A café is a small space with massive operational demands: morning rushes, laptop dwellers, weekend brunch lines, suppliers in the back at 6am. Good café design solves all of those at once — and looks like the kind of place people want to be photographed in.

moodesign has designed Montreal café concepts including the celebrated Café Chat L'Heureux and other independent cafés across the city. Whether you're opening a 30 m² espresso counter or a 200 m² bakery-café, we bring the workflow, branding and code experience your concept needs.

Why café interior design is its own discipline

  • The bar is the engine — espresso machine placement, milk station height, water lines, drainage and the dance between barista and cashier dictate the rest of the layout.
  • Morning vs afternoon vs evening — a single café often plays three different roles per day. Lighting, music and seating types must support the shift.
  • The dwell question — laptop-friendly is a business decision (table size, outlets, soft seating) — not a default. We design the answer that fits your model.
  • Pastry & food display — the case is your second menu. It has to be eye-level, well-lit, refrigerated where needed, and simple to restock.
  • Acoustic balance — exposed surfaces look great in photos and sound terrible in person. Hidden absorption keeps the space pleasant without breaking the aesthetic.
  • Permits & signage — Montreal boroughs require occupation permits for cafés, plus terrace permits if you want sidewalk seating. We handle the drawings.
